When to switch to winter tyres in Volyn

When to fit winter tyres in Kovel and Volyn: the +7 °C rule, minimum tread depth, tyre age and how to book a tyre change without queues.

The first frosts in Volyn bring queues at tyre shops every year. Here is how to pick the right moment for your tyre change, what to check in your tyres and how to skip the queue.

The +7 °C rule

Go by temperature, not by the calendar. When the average daily temperature stays below +7 °C, the compound of summer tyres hardens: grip drops and braking distances grow even on dry asphalt. Winter tyres stay soft at these temperatures.

In Volyn this usually happens in late October or early November, but it varies year to year. Check the 7–10-day forecast: if nights are already at zero and days are no warmer than +5…+7 °C, it is time to book.

Are winter tyres mandatory in Ukraine?

There is no separate law in Ukraine that requires winter tyres. However, the Traffic Rules prohibit driving a passenger car with a remaining tread depth below 1.6 mm. That is not enough for winter tyres: to cope with snow and slush, experts recommend at least 4 mm.

If you travel abroad, check the local rules: winter tyres are not mandatory in Poland, while in some EU countries (for example Germany, Austria and Czechia) the requirement applies in winter conditions.

What to check in your winter tyres

  1. Tread depth. The easiest way is a ruler or a tread depth gauge at several points on each tyre.
  2. Age. The sidewall has a DOT code: the last four digits are the week and year of production (for example, 3821 means week 38 of 2021). Rubber hardens with age even with good tread; many manufacturers recommend replacing tyres older than 6–8 years.
  3. Damage. Bulges, cuts and sidewall cracks mean replacement, not repair.
  4. Even wear. If one side of the tyre is worn more, it is worth checking the wheel alignment.

How to get a tyre change without queues

  • Book in advance, before the first frosts: there are hardly any free slots in the first cold week.
  • Ask for wheel balancing — it is often needed after seasonal storage.
  • After 50–100 km, check the pressure and the wheel bolt torque.
  • Store summer tyres in a cool, dark place away from radiators and sunlight.
